Confidence in Food Safety Rebounding?

A Food Marketing Institute (FMI) survey found that shopper confidence in the safety of the food they buy in supermarkets has rebounded from an 18-year low last year to 81 percent this year.

FMI, however, added that this confidence level "is fragile" since only 11 percent of consumers are "completely confident," down from 15 percent last year; 70 percent said they are "somewhat confident."

Forty-one percent of shoppers are "very concerned" about the nutritional content of the food they buy and eat, according to the FMI survey, and 47 percent are "somewhat concerned." Meanwhile, 62 percent say there is room for improvement in their diets, with 12 percent saying there is "a lot" of room for improvement.

Regarding recycling and sustainability, 20 percent of consumers at supermarkets say it is "very important" and 41 percent said it is  "somewhat important."

According to FMI, 51 percent of supermarkets now sell reusable shopping bags and 44 percent of shoppers use them at least once a month.
