Surge in Natural and Organic Food Sales Means Billion Dollar Boom

Natural and organic foods and beverages can no longer be classified as a fad. In fact these offering are “reshaping the way America shops,” according to research conducted by Packaged Facts.

Once the bastion of retailers such as Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Trader Joes and health food stores, natural an organic foods are more readily available in mainstream grocery stores, and sales are booming, according to Packaged Facts report “Natural and Organic Food and Beverage Trends in the U.S.” In this study, Packaged Facts investigates the trends and demographics fueling this multi-billion dollar industry.

Packaged Facts estimates that 2008 sales of natural and organic food and beverages will continue at a double-digit growth rate to reach $32.9 billion. Between 2005 and 2008, Packaged Facts estimates the market has grown 67.6 percent with a compounded annual growth rate of 18.8 percent.

Not even the current economic upheaval due to the rising prices of fuel and grain is enough to impede the market's steady development, according to Packaged Facts, which projects the segment will experience strong single-digit growth through 2013.

"While natural and organic products are no longer recession proof, Americans are waking up to expect natural and organic food in their stores; food that is pesticide-free, hormone-free and non-GMO genetically modified organisms), and suppliers and retailers are quickly acting to provide it to them.” said Tatjana Meerman, Publisher of Packaged Facts, based on Rockville, Md. “We believe this consumer demand will continue to spur the strong growth for these products,"

The second edition of Natural and Organic Food and Beverage Trends in the U.S. examines the latest information on market size, projections for future growth, future trends and opportunities, consumer demographics, retail landscape, and leading producers. The report also features in-depth consumer analysis highlighting research from both Simmons NCS and BIGresearch, in addition to case studies examining brand performance, sales data, and trends in nine key product categories.
